Tell the finder about your pet and it shows the three matches from the catalog, with a one-line reason and a caveat for each. It takes about a minute, and every rule it uses is listed below.
Find a slow feeder for your pet
How to use it
Answer each question, then press the button. If you are unsure about face shape or size, pick "Not sure" and that question is skipped. You can change an answer and run it again as often as you like. Your answers never leave your browser.
The size question uses rough bands, and they are our own shortcut, not a standard: small is a toy or small breed, medium is a mid-sized dog, large is anything bigger. Breeds vary a lot, so go by the size names the maker uses rather than a number on a scale.
How the finder decides
Hard filters come first. A product is removed if the maker does not name your pet, or if it names the foods it suits and yours is not among them. If you say you already own a bowl you like, only inserts are considered. Lick mats, snuffle mats and puzzle toys are left out because they are not bowls; see our puzzle feeders and lick mats pages for those.
Then each remaining product earns points. Only facts stated in the product data count, and anything the maker or retailer does not state scores nothing either way:
- Dog size: plus 4 if the maker names your size, minus 5 if it names sizes and yours is not one of them.
- Material: plus 3 for a match, minus 3 for a different stated material.
- Food: plus 1 if the maker names your food type.
- Flat face: plus 2 for a listed depth of 2.0 inches or less, minus 2 for more than 2.6. The depth is the maker's stated figure, not a measured ridge height, and the other face shapes do not change the score.
- Fast eating: if a meal takes under a minute, bowls the maker rates at a higher difficulty level gain points. For 1 to 3 minutes, the gentlest level gains one point. These cutoffs are our own scoring choices for sorting the catalog, not a veterinary standard.
- Chewer: plus 1 for stainless steel or ceramic, minus 1 for silicone or rubber. No maker promises chew-proof, so supervise any bowl.
- Care: plus 1 each for dishwasher-safe (including top rack) and a stated non-slip base.
The top three are shown, with no more than two from one brand. Ties go to the product ID alphabetically, so there is no hidden ranking and no paid placement. We earn a commission if you buy through our Amazon links; see the affiliate disclosure.
Limits
This is a shortlist, not a diagnosis. If your pet eats over three minutes, the finder says so, since a slow feeder may add nothing. If your dog has been unwell after meals or you worry about bloat, talk to your vet. A swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up or restlessness after a meal is an emergency, so call a vet now (see the bloat guide). The catalog behind the finder has 50 bowls, elevated stands and inserts. Their specs come from maker and retailer pages checked on 2026-10-16, and those pages change, so confirm size and care details on the maker's page before you buy.
