Straight answer: For a cat that gulps dry or mixed food, pick a wide, shallow bowl with low ridges or small compartments, sized to one meal. If your cat brings food back up often, see a vet first, because a bowl treats gulping and not a medical cause. This page covers bowls; wet food, ceramic and puzzles have their own pages.
We have not tested these bowls. We chose the seven below from the makers' and retailers' published specs, and the table shows what each one states and what it leaves out. They cover compartment bowls, a stainless bowl, an open spike feeder and one lick mat. If your cat mostly eats wet food, go straight to our page on slow feeders for wet food.

Does my cat need a slow feeder?
Maybe. The usual reason is a cat that bolts dry food and brings it back up soon after. PetMD explains this is often regurgitation, not vomiting: undigested food returns soon after eating, by a slightly different mechanism from vomiting. It says dry food can swell once it absorbs water, which can prompt a cat to bring it back up. PetMD lists a slow feeder as one fix, along with a treat toy or puzzle feeder, or spreading food across a large flat pan.
PetMD also says to see a vet if the cat does this often or shows other signs such as weight loss. Eating too fast is only one possible cause, so a bowl is a reasonable first step only if a vet has ruled out a medical cause.
What to look for in a cat slow feeder
- Shallow. The bowls here with a stated height run from 1.2 in to 1.5 in; the spike feeder is 3.1 in. Cats reach into low dishes more easily.
- Portion-sized. Capacity is given for only some picks. Measure your cat's meal into the bowl before you commit.
- Stable. Look for a non-slip base, suction cups, feet or a rubber ring, as the makers state. The Flower dish has no non-slip claim, so put a mat under it.
- Cleanable. The makers or retailer say all seven are dishwasher safe (the Catstages on the top rack only). Deep grooves still need a brush.
- Pattern that matches the food. Compartments and spikes suit kibble. Soft food works better on a mat or flat dish, as covered on our wet food page.
Do whisker-friendly bowls matter?
The CatGuru maker uses the term. We would not buy a bowl for that reason alone. A dvm360 report quotes the AVMA's then-president saying there was no evidence that whiskers rubbing a bowl cause stress. A feline-practice veterinarian on the AAFP board is quoted saying there is no data to support it. The same article notes that a New York Times piece relied on bowl makers as sources, and that Tufts faculty said many medical reasons can change a cat's appetite.
So a wide, shallow dish is low-risk, and some cats may like it. If your cat suddenly drops food, paws at its mouth or stops eating, see your vet first. That can point to a dental or other medical problem, and a different bowl will not fix it.
What about flat-faced cats?
We found no veterinary source that tests slow feeders on flat-faced cats such as Persians, so we won't name a best bowl for them. The practical step is to choose the shallowest dish and watch how your cat eats from it. The Catguru (1.2 in in Target's highlights) and the Flower dish (1.2 in) are the lowest here. If a flat-faced cat struggles to pick up food, ask your vet. Skip the 3.1 in Northmate for that cat unless you see it eating well from it.
Multi-cat homes and foraging
The AAFP consensus statement on feline feeding programs recommends several visually separated feeding stations in multi-cat homes, away from litter boxes. It also says forcing a cat to eat near another cat it avoids can cause stress. If two cats share one feeder, one may be crowded out, so buy one per cat and place them apart.
The same statement recommends puzzle feeders and hiding kibble around the home for activity and mental stimulation, starting simple, and splitting the daily food into several small meals. Our pages on cat puzzle feeders and lick mats cover that side.
When to skip a slow feeder
Skip it if your cat is vomiting often, losing weight or hiding food and has not seen a vet. Skip it for a cat that eats calmly and finishes a meal without trouble. A cat that gives up on a hard pattern may eat less, so if that happens, switch to a flatter bowl.

Best compartment bowl for small meals
Catstages Cat Slow Feeder Bowl
- for cats
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base
- dry / wet food
The maker says it holds up to 1/2 cup of dry or wet food in 30 paw-shaped compartments, with a non-slip base and a top-rack dishwasher rating. Each compartment takes only a little food, so a cat works through them one at a time. It does not state dimensions or the material, and 1/2 cup rules it out as a full meal for a big eater. Choose it for a cat on small, split meals.
Worth knowing: The maker's page gives no dimensions or material name

Best for a cat that pushes bowls around
Messy Cats Interactive Slow Feeder, 6 in
- for cats
- dishwasher safe
- non-slip base
- raw food
A 6 x 6 in feeder with nine integrated suction cups that, the maker says, hold it in place, and multiple barriers around the food. The maker lists it as dishwasher safe, freezer safe and BPA free, and says it takes hard and soft food. Suction needs a smooth, flat surface, which a rough floor or a mat will not give it. The material and capacity are not stated, so measure a portion before you commit.
Worth knowing: The maker's page does not name the material; The maker gives no capacity figure

Best shallow rippled dish
CatGuru Whisker Friendly Cat Bowl (Pack of 2)
- melamine
- for cats
- dishwasher safe
- non-slip base
Target sells a set of two melamine bowls, with a 6.6 x 6.6 x 1.2 in size in its highlights and non-slip legs. Target says they are dishwasher safe but not for the microwave. The maker describes a rippled shallow design for fast eaters. Target's spec table gives 7 x 7 x 2.4 in and two different capacities, so the exact size is unclear. Choose it for a two-cat home, since each cat gets its own dish.
Worth knowing: Target's spec table gives 7 in by 7 in by 2.4 in, which differs from the 6.6 in highlight figure.; Target's capacity is stated two ways, 5 oz in the highlights and 0.5 oz in the specifications.; Its highlight text also mentions stainless steel and ceramic versions, so check the material before buying.

-
Best stainless steel bowl
Neater Pets Non-Tip Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl, Small
- stainless steel
- for dog & cats
- dishwasher safe
- non-slip base
The maker lists the small size at 3/4 cup, 5 in across the top and 1.5 in high, in stainless steel with a removable non-skid rubber ring, and says it suits cats and dogs. The maker calls it dishwasher safe but does not describe the slow-feed pattern, so we cannot say how deep the ridges run. Choose it if you want metal that does not scratch easily and a bowl that will not tip.
Worth knowing: The maker gives no description of the slow-feed pattern; Top diameters are given; the base is wider (7.5 in on the small)

Best for larger portions
Messy Mutts Interactive Slow Feeder, 1.75 Cup
- melamine
- for dog & cats
- dishwasher safe
A melamine dish, 8 in across and 1.2 in high, that the maker says holds up to 1.75 cups. Flower-shaped barriers surround the food, and the maker says the pet has to hunt for each bite. It is dishwasher safe and BPA free per the maker, which sells it for dogs or cats. The maker does not describe a non-slip base. Choose it for a cat on a bigger meal who still needs a low dish.
Worth knowing: The maker's page does not describe a non-slip base; The maker gives no food-type statement

Best open spike feeder for dry food
Company of Animals (Northmate) CATCH Interactive Cat Feeder
- plastic
- for cats
- dishwasher safe
- non-slip base
Northmate's page gives 27 x 23 x 8 cm (10.6 x 9 x 3.1 in) and 37 rounded spikes, 2 to 6 cm tall, that the cat pushes food out between. It is hard plastic with four anti-slip feet and is dishwasher safe, per the maker. It has no walls, so food scatters between the spikes. Choose it for a cat that likes to paw food around. Skip it if you want food contained.
Worth knowing: It is an open feeder with no walls: food is scattered between the spikes

Best mat for a cat that bolts
LickiMat Cat Slomo
- mixed
- for cats
- dishwasher safe
- dry / wet / raw food
An 8 x 8 in rubber mat on a recyclable polypropylene base, with deep pockets and large nubs. The maker pitches the pockets at cats that eat too fast and regurgitate, which is a marketing claim, not a test result. It lists kibble, wet, raw and pate food, and says dishwasher safe. The maker says it is not a chew toy. Choose it as a partial meal or a bowl replacement for a supervised cat. Skip it if your cat chews rubber.
Worth knowing: The maker gives no capacity figure; The maker says it is not a chew toy and advises supervising cats that chew; The maker's slow-eating and digestion statements are marketing claims, not test results

FAQ
Do slow feeder bowls stop cats from throwing up?
They can help when a cat gulps food and brings it back up soon after eating. PetMD lists a slow feeder as one fix for a cat that eats too fast. Frequent vomiting or weight loss needs a vet visit, because a bowl will not treat a medical cause.
What size should a cat slow feeder be?
Match the capacity to one meal. The maker-stated capacities here run from 1/2 cup (Catstages) to 1 3/4 cups (Messy Mutts Flower). Pick a size that holds your cat's portion without crowding the pattern.
Is whisker fatigue real?
Veterinary opinion is split. A dvm360 report quotes the AVMA's then-president saying there is no evidence that whiskers rubbing a bowl cause stress. A wide, shallow dish costs little to try. See a vet if your cat paws at its mouth or drops food.
Can two cats share one slow feeder?
One per cat is better. The AAFP consensus statement recommends several visually separated feeding stations in multi-cat homes, away from litter boxes.
