Straight answer: A puzzle feeder gives your dog a task, while a slow feeder bowl only lengthens the meal. Use puzzles for supervised enrichment, and a bowl when the only aim is to stop dinner vanishing in seconds. A kibble dispenser like the KONG Wobbler can stand in for a bowl.

A puzzle feeder makes your dog work for food, while a slow feeder bowl just makes a meal take longer. Puzzles add mental effort, so they work best as supervised enrichment. If your only goal is to stop a dog from inhaling dinner, a slow feeder bowl is simpler.

This page lists one kibble dispenser and five Nina Ottosson puzzles, from Level 1 to Level 4. We have not tested any of them. What follows comes from the makers' pages, retailer spec sheets, AVSAB and AKC.

Puzzle feeder or slow feeder bowl?

Slow feeder bowl Puzzle feeder
What it does Slows a whole meal Makes the dog solve a task for food
Works for Dogs that gulp Bored or high-energy dogs
Supervision Light Needed, per AVSAB
Cleanup Wash grooves Varies; several Nina Ottosson puzzles are hand wash

You can use both: a bowl for dinner and a puzzle for a snack or a day alone. Our do slow feeders work guide covers what is known about bowls, and the best slow feeders for large dogs list covers bowls.

What do puzzle feeders do for dogs?

AVSAB says food puzzle toys give dogs something to do, make mealtime more fun and can slow the speed at which a dog eats. It cites a study linking toy feeding with higher activity, and notes that more research on pet dogs is needed. The AKC says puzzle toys give mental and physical challenge and can help when a dog is alone or confined, for example during crate rest after an injury. Neither source says a puzzle fixes behavior problems, and we do not either.

How hard should the puzzle be?

AVSAB advises starting on the easiest setting, rewarding early use with tasty treats that fall out easily, and increasing difficulty gradually. If the dog ignores the toy, show it that food comes out.

Outward Hound grades Nina Ottosson puzzles by level. Level 1 is beginner (Dog Smart, Treat Tumble). Level 2 adds more mechanisms (Dog Brick). Level 3 has locked drawers (Casino). Level 4 is the maker's most challenging (MultiPuzzle). For a first puzzle, pick Level 1.

Can a puzzle replace the food bowl?

AVSAB describes moving from treats, to treats mixed with kibble, to all kibble. The KONG Wobbler is the one here that dispenses kibble as it moves. Measure the day's food first, since a dog may not finish a meal from a hard puzzle. If your dog is overweight, AVSAB says toy feeding may help as part of a weight-loss program, but you still need your vet's guidance.

Supervision, chewing and safety

AVSAB advises supervising dogs while they use food toys and choosing a size that reduces choking risk. The AKC says to match the toy's durability to your dog's jaw strength. Puzzles with sliding pieces are not chew toys. Pick them up when the meal ends, and stop if your dog starts to tear one. A heavy chewer needs watching with any of these.

Who does not need a puzzle feeder

  • A dog that eats at a normal pace and gets plenty of activity.
  • A dog that destroys toys. Puzzles are not chew toys.
  • Anyone who cannot supervise.
  • A dog with a medical feeding plan from your vet. Ask before changing how it eats.

It unscrews to fill and is dishwasher safe. AVSAB names the KONG Wobbler as an example of a toy the dog must wobble to drop food. A retailer describes it as holding about 1 cup of kibble, so a big dog's whole dinner needs refills. Retailers disagree on the material, so we do not state it.

Can a puzzle feeder replace my dog's bowl?

Some can. AVSAB describes moving gradually from treats, to treats mixed with kibble, to all kibble. Measure the day's food first so you know your dog eats all of it, and ask your vet if your dog is on a weight plan.

What do Nina Ottosson difficulty levels mean?

What is the best puzzle feeder for large dogs?
