Straight answer: The Fun Feeder is a plastic slow bowl sold in Small, Medium and Large, with a three-step difficulty scale the maker sets itself. Choose the size by the cups in your dog's meal, then the level by how hard you want the pattern to be. Chewers and bowl-pushers should look at steel or ceramic.
This page reads the maker's specifications for each Fun Feeder variant we hold. We did not use the bowls ourselves, so there is no claim here about how any dog reacts. What the records do show is how much a variant holds, which level the maker gives it and how to clean it.
Who it suits: fast eaters from small to large, dogs on kibble or wet food (the maker lists both), and owners who want a graded set of levels.
Who should skip it: dogs that chew or gnaw their bowl, dogs that slide it across the floor, and dogs that quit when food is hard to reach.
Variants side by side
There is no single Fun Feeder. Sizes, patterns and levels differ by color and design name. The first table comes straight from our product records; the second adds the level and capacity as the maker states them.

What the table tells you
- Capacity depends on the design, not just the size name. Two Large bowls hold 4 cups and 3 cups. A dog fed 4 cups a meal needs the Sage Notch, not another Large.
- The hardest level is not in the Large range we hold. The Slowest records here are the Medium Peace Green and the stainless Medium. A large dog that needs a deeper pattern may have to look at those or at another brand.
- Several designs state no level. The Circle Sage and Maze Gray Large pages do not say which of the three levels they are, so we leave them out of the comparison.
- Small is for small meals. At 3/4 cup it suits a toy-breed meal or a puppy portion, not an adult medium dog.
Picking a level
Outward Hound's scale is the maker's, not an independent standard. A reasonable approach is to start at the middle level for a dog that has not used a feeder, move to Slowest if the meal still disappears, and drop to Slow if your dog paws the bowl or walks away from it. Time a meal in your current bowl and in the new one with the eating speed timer so you can see the difference yourself.
Care and materials
The plastic Fun Feeders go on the top rack, and the stainless version carries the same top-rack note. Grooves hold food, so rinse soon after the meal; our cleaning guide covers routines. The maker says the line is free of BPA, PVC, lead and phthalates. That is a materials statement; it says nothing about chew resistance or taste.
When to look at another bowl
If your dog chews plastic, a steel or ceramic bowl is the safer route. If the dog eats more than 4 cups at a time, no variant here fits. For larger breeds, see slow feeders for large dogs, and for common trouble with ridged bowls see slow feeder problems. The wider field is in best slow feeder dog bowls.
Variants and alternatives
-
Large, gentlest level, most room
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl, Notch (Large, Sage)
- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base
- dry / wet food
4 cups at the maker's Slow level, pitched at medium to large dogs. The most room in the Large range, so it is the one for a big meal and a dog that only gulps a little. Skip it if the dog finishes a full bowl in seconds and needs a deeper pattern.
Worth knowing: The maker's page does not give bowl dimensions or name the plastic; Non-slip base is claimed by the maker, but its construction is not described

Large, middle level
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl, Notch (Large, Carbon)
- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base
- dry / wet food

Worth knowing: The maker's page does not give bowl dimensions or name the plastic; The maker's Large Sage Notch holds 4 cups while this Large Carbon Notch holds 3 cups, so check the color and design before buying

Large, Slow, 3 cups
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl (Large, Gray)
- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base
- dry / wet food
Slow level, 3 cups, for large dogs. Its caveat is a mismatch: the maker's line page describes the Large as 3 to 4 cups while this page says 3. Measure the meal first. Skip it if you need the full 4 cups.
Worth knowing: The maker's page gives no bowl dimensions and does not name the plastic; The 'up to 10x slower' claim is the maker's own marketing; The maker's line page describes the Large size as 3 to 4 cups while this page says 3 cups

Medium, middle level
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl, Waffle (Medium, Yellow)
- for dogs

- dry / wet food
2 cups at the Slower level for medium dogs. The step up from Slow for a medium dog that has already outgrown a simple pattern. It will not hold a large dog's meal.

Medium, hardest level
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl, Peace (Medium, Green)
- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base

2 cups at the maker's Slowest level. In our records this is the only plastic Fun Feeder rated Slowest. Skip it for a dog that gives up on puzzles, since the deepest pattern can end a meal in frustration.

- for dogs

- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher

Common questions
FAQ
Which Outward Hound Fun Feeder size holds how much?
Per the maker's pages we hold: Small 3/4 cup, Medium 2 cups, and Large 3 or 4 cups depending on the design. The Large Sage Notch is 4 cups, while the Large Carbon Notch and several other Large designs are 3 cups. Match the cups to your dog's meal.
What do the Slow, Slower and Slowest levels mean?
They are Outward Hound's own labels for a three-step scale. Slow is the gentlest and Slowest the most challenging. They are not an independent rating, and the maker's pages for some designs do not state a level.
Is the Fun Feeder dishwasher safe?
The maker says the plastic Fun Feeders are top-rack dishwasher safe, and the Sage Notch record adds low heat. The stainless version is also top-rack per the maker. Deep grooves can still hold food, so a brush helps.
Does the 'up to 10x slower' claim hold up?
That figure is Outward Hound's own marketing. We have no independent timing, so treat it as a sales line. To get your own number, time a normal meal and a Fun Feeder meal with our eating speed timer.
Can my dog chew the Fun Feeder?
The plastic versions are not described as chew-proof by the maker. A dog that gnaws its bowl is better served by an all-steel or ceramic bowl, such as the alternatives above.
