Straight answer: Neater makes two things people mix up: the Neater Feeder stand, and the slow-feed bowls that go in it or on the floor. The stand is not a slow feeder until a slow bowl sits in it. Pick the bowl by its diameter and cups, and pick the stand only if raising the bowl is right for your dog.

This page reads Neater's published specs for the bowls and stands we hold. We did not use them ourselves. It covers sizes, which bowl fits which stand and where the cautions are.

Who it suits: owners who want stainless steel with nothing to chew off, dogs of any size from toy to large (the bowl sizes run from 3/4 cup to 5 cups), and anyone who wants a bowl that works on a stand or on the floor.

Who should skip it: owners of deep-chested breeds until a vet weighs in on raised bowls, and dogs that need a strongly obstructed bowl. Neater does not describe a maze depth, so check our stainless steel roundup for others.

Bowl Across Height Cups Fits, per the maker
Slow Feed, large 8.25 in 2.75 in 3 Deluxe Large, Express Large
Slow Feed, medium 6.5 in 2 in 1 Deluxe Medium
Slow Feed, small 5.22 in 1.6 in 3/4 Deluxe Cat or Small, Express Cat or Small
Non-Tip, large 9 in (top) 2 in 3 Floor use
Non-Tip, extra-large 10 in (top) 2.44 in 5 Floor use
The Niner (plastic) 8.38 in 2.44 in 2 Deluxe Large, Express Medium to Large

The Non-Tip bowls are wider at the base than the top (11.5 in and 12.6 in), so the footprint is bigger than the opening suggests. The medium Non-Tip is 1.5 cups, and the small is 3/4 cup.

What the slow-feed bowl does, and what we do not know

The maker's pages describe stainless bowls with a slow-feed pattern but give no figure for maze depth or obstacle height. The Niner is the exception: nine raised, rounded peaks that create food pockets. So treat the stainless bowls as a modest obstacle and compare them with the deeper plastic mazes in our slow feeder inserts roundup.

What you get in exchange is steel, with no plastic to chew, and dishwasher use that the maker allows. If sliding is your problem, the Non-Tip versions carry a removable non-skid ring, which the standard bowls do not.

The raised-bowl caveat

The Deluxe and the 2.5 Cup feeder lift the bowl off the floor. Whether that is a good idea for a deep-chested dog is a question for your vet. Our slow feeders and bloat guide sets out the research, which conflicts, and nothing shows that raising a bowl or slowing a meal prevents bloat.

A swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up or restlessness after a meal is an emergency, so call a vet now. Do not wait to see if it passes.

If you want the bowl without the height, use a Slow Feed or Non-Tip bowl on the floor. See elevated slow feeders for the stands in our catalog.

Which Neater piece for which dog

  • Large or giant dog, large meal: the 3-cup or 5-cup Non-Tip on the floor, or the 3-cup Slow Feed in a Deluxe Large if your vet is fine with raising it.
  • Medium dog: the 1-cup Slow Feed or 1.5-cup Non-Tip. Check that the meal fits.
  • Toy dog or cat: the 3/4-cup bowl. A cat or a toy dog's meal will not fit anything larger comfortably.
  • Flat-faced dog: the Niner, which the maker says suits Bulldogs and Pugs.

Other options are in the large dog picks and the roundups linked above.

Common questions

FAQ

Is the Neater Feeder a slow feeder?

Not by itself. The Neater Feeder is an elevated stand, and a slow-feed bowl makes it a slow feeder. The Deluxe Large bundle includes a stainless slow feed bowl, and Neater sells the bowls separately.

Which Neater slow feed bowl fits which stand?

Per the maker: the 3-cup bowl fits the Neater Feeder Deluxe Large and the Express Large, the 1-cup fits the Deluxe Medium, and the 3/4-cup fits the Deluxe Cat or Small and the Express Cat or Small. The Niner fits the Deluxe Large and the Express Medium to Large. Check the opening before you buy.

Can I use a Neater slow feed bowl without the stand?

Yes, as a floor bowl. The maker's page states no non-slip feature for the standard bowls, so a pushing dog may slide it. The Non-Tip versions add a removable rubber ring for that job.

Are raised bowls safe for dogs prone to bloat?

The research conflicts, which is why our bloat guide covers it in full. Nothing shows a bowl of any height prevents bloat. Ask your vet before raising the food of a deep-chested breed.

Are Neater slow feed bowls dishwasher safe?

The maker says the stainless slow feed bowls are dishwasher safe. The plastic Niner is top-rack safe, and the Deluxe feeder is described the same way.
