Straight answer: Pick a slow feeder to slow a gulper's meal, and a lick mat for treats, soft food and distraction. A mat is not built to hold a full portion of kibble. For a fast eater the bowl does more; against boredom, the mat does more.

Buy a slow feeder if your goal is to slow down a dog that gulps its meal. Buy a lick mat if you want a treat, a distraction or a way to use wet food. If you are on the fence, the bowl does more for a fast eater and the mat does more for boredom or anxiety.

We did not time any of these, and we found no trustworthy figure for how much either one extends eating time, so the table gives none.

When to choose a slow feeder

  • Your dog finishes a bowl of kibble in moments.
  • Meals are large. Bowls in our records go up to several cups.
  • You want something that sits out at mealtime without watching.
  • You have a deep-chested dog. VCA Canada lists rapid eating as a bloat risk factor, but nothing shows a bowl prevents bloat. A swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up or restlessness after a meal is an emergency, so call a vet now. Our bloat guide has the detail.

See our slow feeder picks or read whether slow feeders work.

When to choose a lick mat

  • You want a calm activity for fireworks, storms or crate time. The AKC lists these uses.
  • You feed soft food, or want to stretch a spoonful of wet food.
  • Your dog already eats at a normal pace.
  • You have a cat to occupy. Choose a mat made for cats.

The full roundup is on our lick mat page, and wet food bowls are on slow feeders for wet food.

The practical difference in daily use

A slow feeder fits into your routine without extra effort. You fill it, set it down and walk away. A lick mat takes more setup: you spread the food, keep an eye on your pet, take the mat away and wash it soon after.

That is why a bowl is the default for a dog that gulps every day, while a mat works well as an occasional extra. If your dog needs something to do in the evening, the mat earns its place even if the bowl handles the meals.

What the sources say

The AKC lists soothing anxious dogs, occupying a mouthy puppy, limited dental help and crate training as uses for lick mats, and notes some mats double as slow feeders. VCA Canada names rapid eating among the risk factors for bloat. Neither source compares mats and bowls, and we found no independent study that does. The choice here comes from how each product is built and the dog in front of you.

A note on size and portion

The Slomo mat is 8 in square and the Mighty Paw bowl gives no size at all, so neither is a big surface. A big dog on a full kibble meal needs a bowl. The KONG Licks Mealtime pick is the middle path: a roomy dry-food bowl with a lick pad, though retailers say hand wash only. If you feed wet food in the morning and kibble at night, one bowl and one mat can split the load.

Can you use both?

Yes, and many owners do. Serve the main meal in a bowl and keep the mat for something extra. If your dog is a heavy chewer, watch the mat or skip it and pick a steel or ceramic bowl.

Common questions

FAQ

Is a lick mat better than a slow feeder?

Neither is better overall. A slow feeder bowl is built for a whole meal of kibble or wet food. A lick mat is built for soft food and treats and doubles as enrichment. For a dog that gulps its dinner, start with the bowl.

Can a lick mat replace a slow feeder bowl?

Only for a small meal of soft food. The mats in our records give sizes, not meal capacities, apart from the Messy Mutts well that holds up to 1 cup of liquid. Large dogs and kibble meals need a bowl.

Can I use a lick mat and a slow feeder together?

Yes. Use the slow feeder for the main meal and the mat for a short treat session, a vet visit or crate time. They do different jobs, so you do not have to choose.

Are lick mats safe for dogs and cats?

The AKC says to supervise, replace damaged mats and use only food-grade ones. A lick mat is not a chew toy. If your pet swallowed a piece, call your vet. Cat mats are sold separately; our cat pages cover them.
