Straight answer: For a pug, choose a small slow feeder, from a 3/4 cup bowl up to 2 cups, with low obstacles or an open surface and a non-slip base. Pugs are small and are often recorded as overweight, so the bowl should fit a measured meal. It is not a diet tool, so settle the amount with your vet.
Pugs are a different case from other flat-faced breeds. They are small dogs, overweight was the most common problem recorded in a large UK study of the breed, and a day's food is only a cup or two. That shapes the shopping list more than the face does. The four picks were chosen for small capacity and a gentle pattern, and only a few makers publish the specs we need, so the list is short on purpose.

How much does a pug's slow feeder need to hold?
Less than many bowls assume. Work from the cups in your pug's daily plan, divide by the number of meals, and pick a bowl that holds at least that. The sized picks here run from 3/4 cup to 2 cups. A big bowl with a small meal in it is a waste, because the food spreads thin and the pattern does little.
Be strict about the measuring. A level cup from a measuring cup is not the same as a scoop from the bag, and the difference matters when the whole day's food is a cup or two.
Pugs and weight
The Royal Veterinary College's VetCompass study of 1,009 pugs under UK veterinary care found overweight and obesity was the most common single disorder: 133 dogs, or 13.18 percent. The authors say the figure is probably an underestimate, because the study looked back at clinic records. ACVS says obesity worsens the problems of brachycephalic dogs.
Langford Vets gives the practical side for flat-faced dogs: weigh the food carefully, feed at the lower end of the recommended amount, and weigh the dog every two weeks. The ribs should be easy to feel. A slow feeder fits into that routine by stretching out a small meal, but it does not replace the weighing.
If you want a pug to eat less food without feeling cheated, ask your vet about the options. Do not cut portions on your own and do not add treats on top of a slow feeder meal.
Face shape and the bowl
The University of Cambridge's BOAS page describes pugs as brachycephalic, with a shortened skull and flattened face that is often accompanied by upper airway obstruction. A flat face has little muzzle to push into a maze.
We found no source that says a certain bowl damages a pug's eyes or face, so we don't make that claim. The practical advice is simple. Skip tall, narrow ridges. Choose rounded peaks, a low pattern or a flat surface, and watch the first meals for pawing, snorting or a dog that walks away. The French Bulldog slow feeder page goes further into reflux and regurgitation, which flat-faced breeds of both kinds can have.
Mini meals and mats
Langford Vets recommends three or four small meals for flat-faced dogs with reflux, and says a slow-feed bowl or lick mat can help. For a pug, small meals and small bowls go together. A lick mat works for a wet or soaked meal. It does not suit a dog that swallows without chewing, since it needs licking. More options are on our lick mats page.
Slipping and chasing
Small light bowls slide. The Neater Niner lists non-skid dots on its base, per the maker. The small Neater steel bowl and the Northmate do not state a non-slip base, and a rubber mat under any bowl helps a pug that chases the last piece.
When to skip a slow feeder for a pug
- Your pug eats calmly and keeps its food down.
- It struggles to breathe while eating, gags often or brings food back up. See a vet before buying another bowl.
- You are using the bowl to cut calories rather than to slow the pace. Measure the food instead.
- Two pets share the bowl. Feed them apart.

Our picks
-
Open grass-blade surface for flat faces
Company of Animals (Northmate) GREEN mini Slow Interactive Feeder
- plastic
- for dogs
- dishwasher safe
- dry / wet food
Northmate designed this open feeder for small dogs, puppies and flat-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs. It has 32 blades between 1.5 and 5.5 cm tall and no walls, so you scatter the food between them and the nose never goes into a channel. It measures 29 x 22.5 x 7.3 cm and is dishwasher safe, per the maker. It gives no cup capacity, so it suits a measured meal spread thin, not a bowl you fill.
Worth knowing: It is an open feeder with no walls: food is scattered between the blades

Rounded peaks, 2 cups
Neater Pet Brands The Niner Slow Feed Bowl (2 Cups)
- plastic
- for dogs
- top-rack dishwasher
- non-slip base
Neater says the Niner works for flat-faced dogs such as Bulldogs and Pugs. Nine rounded peaks form food pockets in an 8.38 in wide ABS bowl that holds up to 2 cups, with non-skid dots on the base and top-rack dishwasher care. Neater advises not to overfill it. For a pug eating a cup or less, fill it part way.
Worth knowing: The maker advises not to overfill it

Smallest steel bowl, 3/4 cup
Neater Pet Brands Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl 3/4-Cup
- stainless steel
- for dogs
- dishwasher safe
The maker gives 5.22 in across, 1.6 in high and a 3/4-cup capacity, in stainless steel that is dishwasher safe. It is made to fit Neater's small and cat feeders. At 3/4 cup it suits a pug on a strict portion or several mini meals. The maker states no non-slip base, so a pug that chases the bowl will need a mat under it.

Lick mat for wet or soaked meals
Messy Mutts Lick Bowl Mat 10 in
- silicone
- for dogs
- dishwasher safe
A 10 in food-grade silicone mat with a grooved surface and a center bowl that holds up to 1 cup of liquids, per the maker. Spread wet or soaked food over it and the pug has to lick it off. Common questions
FAQ
Do pugs need a slow feeder?
Not every pug does. If yours eats at a steady pace and keeps food down, a plain bowl is fine. A slow feeder helps pugs that gulp, gag or regurgitate after meals, and it makes a small measured portion last longer. Ask your vet if the gagging is frequent.
Are pugs prone to being overweight?
Yes. A Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study of 1,009 UK pugs found overweight and obesity was the most common recorded disorder, at 13.18 percent, and the authors say that is probably an underestimate. ACVS adds that obesity makes brachycephalic breathing problems worse. Your vet can tell you your pug's target weight.
Will a slow feeder help my pug lose weight?
A bowl does not reduce calories. It can make a measured portion take longer to eat, but weight loss depends on how much food your pug gets in total. Work out the portion with your vet and weigh the food.
Is a deep maze bad for a pug's flat face?
We found no veterinary study that says so. What is clear is that a short nose has trouble reaching into deep, tight channels, so shallow patterns or open surfaces are the safer choice. Watch for pawing, gagging or giving up.
